Physical Exams Q&A

What are physical exams?

Physical exams are medical evaluations and the foundation of preventive health care. They can detect health problems in the early phases, reducing the chance of worsening complications. Physical exams also offer an opportunity to choose vaccinations and other preventive care options. They help keep you and your family members as healthy as possible.

Pronto Med Care also offers sports and school physical exams, which assess your or your child’s health to determine if it’s safe for them to attend school or play sports.

What happens during physical exams?

Physical exams at Pronto Med Care may include:

Weigh-in and vital signs check

Your specialist weighs you and calculates your body mass index (BMI). They evaluate height, growth, and sometimes head circumference in children. Your specialist also checks your pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs.

Developmental screenings

Developmental screenings in children determine if they’re growing and developing at an expected pace. Your specialist evaluates their cognitive, social, and emotional functioning, as well as gross and fine motor skills.

Medical history review

The Pronto Med Care team reviews your medical history. This includes a personal and family history of disease, medications, symptoms, lifestyle habits, and more.

Medical exam

During a medical exam, your family medicine specialist evaluates your breathing, heartbeat, neck, throat, abdomen, and reflexes. They provide prostate screenings for men and pelvic exams with Pap tests for women.

Screenings

Your Pronto Med Care provider might suggest blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, sexually transmitted disease (STD), or other health screenings. They may order blood or urine testing, tissue swabs, imaging procedures, or other diagnostic tests. They also offer vision and hearing screenings.

Preventive care

Pronto Med Care provides vaccinations, birth control for women, health education, medically supervised weight management, and other preventive care services.

Treatments

If you need treatment, your Pronto Med Care team offers medication management and other solutions that maximize your health and lessen the risk of medical complications.

How often should I schedule physical exams?

Schedule physical exams once yearly or more frequently for babies and young children. Your Pronto Med Care specialist may recommend more frequent visits if you have a chronic disease. See your family medicine provider if you or your child needs a sports or school physical, becomes ill, has health-related questions, or develops unusual symptoms.
